Movember is here!

2022 was our most successful year so far. Team GGS was ranked 13th in the UK for the Movember Schools Challenge. We raised over £3100 and on the back of our decade long participation in this amazing charity we have also been invited to join the inaugural Movember Hall of Fame. Therefore, 2023 needs to be even bigger, even more spectacular and even more successful than any of our previous Movembers.

The PE Department and the Key Stage 5 Team have jumped on some new opportunities for students to raise funds for Movember. Sixth form students are invited to grow moustaches and compete for the Student Movember Award. This prize has two criteria – moustache quality and funds raised. All students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Movember Mo-movement challenge – setting themselves a physical activity target for the month and then collecting funds from sponsors once they have achieved their physical activity goal. There will also be a Movember Non -Uniform Day later in the month, fake moustaches optional!

The Movember charity was born in Melbourne, Australia in 2003. A group of friends asked two vital questions: Where had all the moustaches gone and how could they use the mo to raise money for charity. That first year involved thirty 'mobros' and was so popular that in 2004 the friends formed a registered company, began linking themselves to men's health charity and began spreading the word of the mo! 2006 saw the charity spread to New Zealand and by 2007 there were moustaches sprouting all over the world. Since those early days more than six million mo-bros and mo-sistas have raised well over £500 000 000 for men's health research and associated charities. 1250 vital mens’ health projects have been funded by the Movember organisation since those heady days of 2003.

The staff are also supporting Movember. Growing moustaches and competing in a distance challenge. During Movember 2022 staff ran a total of 1257km, which was amazing – they are aiming to beat this for Movember 2023!
