Drama at GGS offers a wide range of opportunities for students with varied talents from acting to technical, script writing and practitioner workshops.
All students whether they are an experienced performer or a complete novice, they are encouraged to join us to explore and develop their talents. There is something for everyone.
In our technical theatre club, students are able to explore the technical equipment we use for shows and performances; including lighting, sound set making and costume and makeup workshops led by industry professionals. During drama extracurricular sessions, students work on short performances, confidence building, comedy stretches and monologues and duologues. They have opportunities to share their own creations as well as working towards whole school productions and performances of well known and relevant playwrights.
Directing and producing workshops are provided to offer students the chance to develop their directing and production role skills, such as stage management, marketing and front of house. Students utilise these skills to run the whole school performances. Frequent trips to West End and local theatre performances serve to enhance students experience of live productions
Our GCSE students take on leadership roles in extra curricular activities and in the preparation of school productions.
They also have academic support sessions designed to improve exam preparation as well as exploring the analytical and evaluative skills of writing live theatre reviews and developing script writing skills.
We hold at least one major whole school live performance each year. In recent years, the School has put on ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ ‘Bugsy Malone’, and ‘Avenue Q’. In addition to the performance of a play or musical, there are also regular showcases for example our ‘Shakespeare Shorts’ our ‘Drama festival’ and year group pantomime performances
