Societies

GGS Societies

We have a thriving group of societies to support our students in their future careers and endeavours.

These are student led groups, working together to support each other and widen their horizons in their chosen fields. There are link staff to provide advice and guidance, but it is the motivation and dedication of the student leaders who work together finding activities, visits and experiences to enhance their prospects and support their applications to the next stages of their lives.

The Medical Society

Our medical society is aimed at students who are interested in a health-related profession.

This is broader than just Medicine and includes: Veterinary, Dentistry, Nursing & Allied Health professions. Health careers are more than just ‘a job’ they are a vocation. Students in the society work together to understand what skills are looked for, what grades are required, whether an additional admissions test is needed and provide support to understand the application process. Students discuss together the different types of work experience available and help each other to understand the importance of reflection - what they have learnt from their experiences.

GGS Alumni visit to share their experiences having entered medical professions.

They provide guidance about the admission process, interviews and to talk about life at medical school . A variety of speakers have joined meetings to broaden members' knowledge of careers in health, most recently:  Doctors, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, Dentists, Veterinary students, and a Professor of Bio-Sciences.

The Business & Finance Society

The Business and Finance Society is an exceptional platform that fosters the growth and development of students interested in the dynamic world of commerce and finance. With a primary aim to equip students with practical knowledge and skills, the society organises various activities and events throughout the academic year. These include guest speaker sessions featuring industry professionals, interactive workshops on topics such as budgeting, investment strategies, and entrepreneurship, as well as competitions that simulate real-world business scenarios. By actively participating in the society, students gain invaluable skills such as financial literacy, teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication. The Business and Finance Society helps develop a strong understanding of market dynamics, ethical business practices, and financial decision-making, which prepare students of Gravesend Grammar School for a future in the business world.

“My desire to become the chair of the Business and Finance Society derives from my ambition to ensure I can expand/build my portfolio in order to help facilitate my goals and hopes for life after A levels. After 6th form I would like to pursue a degree apprenticeship within business analysis or consulting, particularly within the field of insurance as it is an industry that I find both unique and intriguing. By becoming the chair of this society, I have no doubt in my mind that it will help me to realise my aspirations.  I have the opportunity to become a responsible leader and to work with the society as a part of the team.”

The Oxbridge Society

The Oxbridge Society aims to provide advice, guidance and aspiration to students in the higher attainment bands in the Sixth Form. Students are identified to join the Oxbridge Society after the first grade card in Year 12. Invitations are based on students attaining highly in their GCSEs and/or their first 6th form grade card. Requests are also considered where a student has not been identified.

Students in the Oxbridge Society have access to a range of opportunities that include:

  • Advice and guidance in meetings at school led by Mr Pallant, 6th form Head of School.
  • Support sessions on super curricular, applications, personal statements and interviews run by staff from Oxford or Cambridge.
  • A visit to Oxford or Cambridge university in the January of Year 12.
  • Visits from GGS alumni to share their experiences on what it is like at the universities and how they were successful in their applications.
  • An interview preparation day led by Adam Holloway MP to help prepare students for interview. This is held in late November/early December of Year 13 in the short window between invitations to interview being given and them taking place.
  • Regular information and opportunities shared on the Oxbridge Google classroom. This includes information about summer schools, open days, essay competitions, master classes and general advice and guidance.

“To put it simply, the Oxbridge Society served to propel my university candidacy by focusing my desire to be better as a student. We're often told that hard work counts, but the trip to Oxford University last year allowed me to perceive why it mattered, and as a result I was more purposeful in not only A levels in general, but in applying specifically early to and targeting universities. Events like the Cambridge interview sessions took me the extra step further as often the proficiency needed to actually get into top Universities can be overlooked. The society is really useful in making the most of every opportunity students get and how best to profit from them. My advice is to be aspirational and to definitely not avoid applying to Oxbridge out of fear of being rejected, as nothing is confirmed till it's confirmed!"
