Maths News - Term

This term has seen two challenges taking place in Maths.

In September we had over 20 girls participating in the UKMT Mathematical Competition for Girls - an opportunity for young women to show what they can do when faced with a series of Mathematical problems. A special mention to Cherlyn Lo 13BS, Aashna Salunke 13GSS and Tobi Badejo 12AS, who came away with Distinctions.

Last week was the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge which saw 100 students from Year 11 -13 try questions such as this - the first question on the paper: Pablo has 100 identical small cubes. He uses some of them to build the largest possible solid cube. How many of the small cubes were left over? A 16 B 27 C 36 D 73 E 92 To this one, one of the last questions on the paper: Together n aardvarks and 12 anteaters eat n2 + 20n = 25 ants. Each animal eats the same whole number of ants. How many ants does each animal eat? A 61 B 66 C 71 D 74 E 79

If you like this sort of thing, the questions and solutions can be found at https://ukmt.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/ SMC_2025_questions_and_solutions.pdf

We have also started an exciting competition in the sixth form - Ritangle. This is a series of questions released weekly that teams of students tackle together. We’ll update you on the progress of teams such as The AsymptGOATS and Juan Matamatics next newsletter. JMR
