Bronze DofE - Term 5 Update

Bronze DofE - Term 5 Update

Following the preparatory work in Term 4, 46 Year 9 students took part in a hands-on Training Day on Saturday, 26 April, marking an important milestone in their DofE journey. We met at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Chalk, where seven expedition groups set off on a short walking route to Higham Memorial Hall. During the walk, students practised key navigation skills, using Ordnance Survey maps and compasses. They learnt how to orientate a map, take simple compass bearings and follow a planned route – skills essential for their Qualifying Expedition later in the summer.

On arrival at Higham Memorial Hall, the focus turned to campcraft. Students cooked their lunch using Trangia stoves, learning to safely and efficiently prepare food outdoors. Afterwards, they worked in teams to pitch tents and set up camp – an exercise that highlighted the importance of communication, collaboration and problem solving. The weather was on our side, and the day ran smoothly, thanks to the enthusiasm and positive attitude of all involved.

This training day not only solidified important expedition skills but also gave the students a sense of achievement and excitement for what lies ahead in July. Well done to all participants! Thank you to Mr Humphrey, Miss Couves, Mr Griggs, Mrs McLean and Mrs Purdy for their support on this day.
