Cambridge University Trip

Cambridge University Trip

Some students in the Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) group went on a trip to Queens’ College at Cambridge University on Tuesday 25th February. We were welcomed into the college and had most of the talks in a room called the Bowell room. The day started with talks on the kind of university Cambridge is, how the application process of Oxbridge is different from other universities in terms of earlier deadlines and interviews as well as the high possibility of writing an admissions test for your course of choice. There is also a separate form to be submitted to Cambridge after the UCAS application which is like a personal statement but isn’t—it is supposed to tell the university more about you if you have applied to a course that is specific to Cambridge and not offered elsewhere (of which there are many!). We also had a fun little game of true and false and I learnt that a Lord Bryon hid a bear in his room in Cambridge; Oliver Cromwell’s head is buried in Sidney Sussex College but the specific location is not known and so much more. The school ambassadors gave us a tour of the college; we saw some of the oldest buildings, fancy dining halls, the chapel, the accommodation , supervision rooms and much more. The tour was very thorough and showed us some of the excellent facilities and how steeped in history the university is. We got back and were treated to a lovely lunch, which my favourite part had to be the yummy doughnuts. After lunch we got back to talking about personal statements, how to build a great one and common mistakes people make while writing them. It was such a useful session that got us all thinking and planning our own course of action. The day ended with us visiting the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences which was a lovely space to be in and look at interesting artefacts as well as see some of Cambridge itself, which is such a beautiful city.
