“It’s MathsMas!”

As a reward for their hard work on Sparx this term, 28 Year 7 and 8 students took part in a Merry Mathsmas activity at the start of December. This was a virtual workshop with a number of schools throughout the country, focussed on fun Maths activities with a Christmas theme. Students took part in a Christmas cracker magic trick and explored the Fold and Cut theorem using Christmas decorations (more about Fold and Cut here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZREp1Mapktm) We were also on screen for the Maths Christmas Lottery, but unfortunately we didn’t win - maybe next year! This December, Gravesend Grammar School hosted the highly anticipated Mathsmas, a unique event exclusively for the top-performing KS3 students on Sparx Maths. Led by Mr Browne of the Maths Department, the event transformed an ordinary room into a festive classroom of mathematical challenges and sweet holiday treats. Students engaged in Christmas-themed problem-solving activities, paper -based activities and collaborative games such as Kahoot designed to test their mathematical prowess while embracing the holiday spirit. The event was not just about solving equations but celebrating the amazing achievement. To add to the festive atmosphere, participants enjoyed an assortment of seasonal sweets and treats. Mathsmas was a fantastic opportunity for students to bond, showcase their skills, and celebrate their hard work in Sparx. Personally, it was a fantastic event and I hope for it to be held again soon.
