Art Murals Project

During Enrichment Week two groups of Year 9 students worked together to produce two large scale murals to brighten up our Art Terrace. The murals were inspired by the work of the artist, Bob and Roberta Smith, who creates placards and murals to highlight the plight and the importance of art education for young people. The students created their own placards with their messages about what art means to them and contributed to a large mural, with additional help from two Year 12 work experience students from Fort Pitt school. I will be the first to admit that art teachers can be a little geeky about paint but it was important to use the right materials great finish - we used Masterdec decking paint, which created bright, opaque colours which are intermixable and waterproof - they were perfect for the task - we were supported by Brewers Decorating Centre in Maidstone, who gave us great advice and a discount on the materials to help the project become reality. Huge thanks go to them for their help. The murals look fantastic and certainly brighten up the space. We hope the messages they contain will help to inspire students for years to come! AJS
