Mission Statement

It is the aim of the Psychology department to equip students with the knowledge to become critical thinkers with an excellent understanding of theory and research.

We will not simply teach to the exam, but encourage our students to read academic works from studies within the course, to more contemporary research. We will encourage them to debate, and consider how to use the theory they are learning to support their arguments.

We will challenge our students to complete work of an undergraduate degree standard such as carrying out and writing up their own research, and to apply their understanding of theory to real life issues.

Students who wish to study Psychology at university will be well-prepared with the knowledge and skills to do so. Those who do not continue their Psychology studies further will have a good understanding of the world around them, and how Psychology plays a role in every facet of it.

Student Voice

Key Stage 5

“I initially chose psychology because it was something I’d never done before and seemed interesting. It’s currently my most enjoyable subject and by far the most eye-opening to psychological research and how it’s used in our everyday lives. From learning about famous studies which uncovered causes about human behaviour to learning how to conduct your own study, psychology A-level has been thrilling so far.”

“I like Psychology because of the nature of the subject being so broad it interests me; it ranges from social to clinical aspects of Psychology and learning about the behaviour of the brain and our mind. Moreover, seeing the theories and explanations being applied to everyday life and situations in life is truly fascinating.”
