We are thrilled to report on the recent Silver DofE Qualifying Expedition held in the picturesque Ashdown Forest. This year’s expedition was blessed with splendid autumnal weather – maybe our participants performed some kind of ‘no-rain dance’ beforehand. Except for just a few drops of rain towards the end of their adventures on the last day, they had thoroughly enjoyed the journey from the start to finish. All 33 participants demonstrated exemplary campcraft, showcasing their skills in pitching tents that could withstand a gentle breeze (and perhaps a curious squirrel or two). Navigation was countryside, the village of Forest Row and its nearby golf course, proving that they can read maps when they are not distracted by the weather.
The spirit of teamwork was palpable, as groups encouraged one another, shared snacks, and maybe even engaged in a bit of friendly competition over who could cook the best meal at the campsite. Overall, the expedition not only fulfilled the requirements for the Expedition section but also created lasting memories and friendships. Some might even consider signing up to the Gold DofE after they achieve their Silver DofE in the next six months.
Congratulations to all participants on their hard work and achievements. We look forward to seeing their presentations on what they have learnt about Ashdown Forest. Thanks to Miss Couves, Mr Foster, Mr Griggs (and special guests Mr Newman and Mr Parrott) for supervising and assessing the expedition groups over the three days. KKP
