KMGSHA - Piano Competition

On 22nd June 2024, the finale of the KMGSA Piano Competition took place, myself and Harry Jesshop (12AS) travelled to Canterbury to compete in the Duet Category and the Grade 8+ categories. Having competed and advanced in the inter-school, and regional competitions, we were excited to put ourselves forward for the final test for the chance to win the competition as a whole. Our judge was Professor David Owen Norris, a pianist, composer and broadcaster most well known for shows like ‘Chord of the Week’ on BBC2; he was astounding as a judge and fascinating to listen to, he spoke with passion and years of experience - we couldn’t have asked for anyone better. The day itself was divided into two halves with the grade 5-7 and the duets in the morning, and the Grade 8+ competition in the afternoon. We were astounded by the quality of music performed in all categories, including the music from the 8 duet competitors. Despite the outstanding quality of the performances from the students we were competing against, Harry and I pulled through, obtaining the runner up trophy for that category. After our duet success, I competed against eight students from other schools in the Grade 8+ category for the afternoon. While not receiving any awards, the experience and the feedback from the judge was ample compensation for making it to the finals. The experience as a whole was incredible, from the first round last year, to the regionals last term, and then to the finals, we had an amazing time listening to incredible music and playing the pieces we had spent so long practising to an eager crowd. We hope to compete again, going for gold! Solace Behr 12AJS
