Mission Statement

The Spanish Department strives to produce open-minded and global students who appreciate and seek to understand different cultures and embrace the world around them. We will produce students who will be prepared for the ever increasingly globalised world. Students will be capable communicators both verbally and in writing in order to be able to use the language effectively in real life situations.

The Spanish Department strives to provide all students with a broad curriculum that is rich in challenge, academic variety and rigour. We aim to create confident, capable, tenacious and enthusiastic students who will use Spanish in real life situations and in academia. Students will develop skills including problem-solving, resilience and perseverance to deal with challenges that they will encounter.

Student Voice

Key Stage 3

“I like studying Spanish because it is very interesting learning a brand new language from scratch. It is fascinating to see how the language works and its roots. I think it is important to learn Spanish so that you understand their culture and if you go to Spain you can now understand what they are saying and fit in nicely in the country.”

“I believe that Spanish is a good and helpful subject because it provides all students who choose it with a way to understand other cultures and you can use it for school trips, travelling and dealing with clients in the future. Spanish provides a way to connect with others in their own language. Overall, Spanish is a truly useful subject for school and day-to-day life.”

Key Stage 4

“By choosing to study Spanish at GCSE, I have been able to problem-solve and improve my communication skills by freely interacting with people, regardless of language barrier, which further boosts my confidence and independence as an individual. The range of topics covered within the subject gives you the chance to express your opinion, as well as understand cultures and traditions in Spanish speaking countries.”

Key Stage 5

“As a facilitating subject, studying Spanish puts me at a significant advantage when applying to top universities but perhaps more importantly, as the second-most spoken language in the world, studying Spanish will help me immeasurably after I graduate, as employers highly value proficiency in a modern foreign language. In addition, it makes being a tourist in Spain (as well as 20 other Spanish speaking countries) much, much easier!”
