Music

At Gravesend Grammar School we recognise the importance of musical education and the benefits it has on young developing minds.

We work to ensure that all students have access to exciting and engaging opportunities. Students are welcome to become part of our growing creative community, where we encourage all students to become involved in music in some way, as an enjoyable experience that supports academic and social development, as well as promoting good mental health.

Music is both a focus for study and a means of communal expression with students developing musical understanding and skills (in perception, as composers, and as performers) in classes, in option groups, individually and in school ensembles. Many celebrations of school life, such as assemblies, Prize Giving events and the Carol Service, are enhanced by musical performance. Additionally, we host our own music gigs and recitals throughout the school year, plus opportunities in collaboration with other local schools and organisations.

Participation and performance extend beyond the classroom.

Vocal and instrumental lessons are available to students in all year groups. A wide range of extra-curricular musical activities (instrumental groups, bands and a choir) take place each week during lunch time and after school. We strongly believe that the musical opportunities and experiences we provide serve as an ideal opportunity for students to develop important social skills, gain confidence and independence and friendships that will last a lifetime.
