The Milton Award

At Gravesend Grammar School we strive to ensure that our students leave us as well rounded, creative, caring and accomplished young men. Running in conjunction with their academic studies, we are very proud to offer the Milton Award which provides a range of opportunities to the students.

The award will recognise students who go beyond the curriculum and aim to make themselves the most accomplished student that they can be. The award covers the following areas:

  • Practical Participation
  • The World of Academia
  • The World of Work
  • Benevolence
  • The Arts
  • The World of GGS and Beyond.

In order to ensure that the students gain experience in a wide range of areas, some of the activities are compulsory and some are optional. We have selected these core components for their appropriate rigour and challenge.

The Awards

There are three levels of the Milton Award to ensure that all students can achieve within the system but that the most engaged and committed are recognised.

Half Milton - The Half Milton can be achieved by ensuring that a student will have covered four compulsory areas of the award. They will need to achieve 130 points from 4 separate areas to be awarded a Half Milton.

Full Milton - The Full Milton is very challenging and more difficult to achieve. A student needs to achieve a range of credits over a sustained period of time in all areas. They will need to achieve 210 points from 5 separate areas to be awarded the Full Milton.

The Milton Scholarship - will be awarded to the most outstanding student who has displayed enthusiasm and dedication by achieving a Full Milton Award. They will have gone above and beyond expectations. To receive the award they must have achieved the following:

  • Range of Achievements - The winner of the Milton Scholarship will have achieved credits in all areas of the Milton Award.
  • Notable Achievement - The winner of the Milton Scholarship will have made a notable achievement in one area of the Milton Awards
  • Dedication and Commitment - The winner of the Milton Scholarship will have demonstrated dedication and commitment to their achievements.

The scholarship will be a £1000 prize aimed to support them in their academic career as they enter Key Stage 5. This money must be used to support them in their A-Level academic endeavours at GGS.The Tomori Award - The Tomori Award will be awarded each year to the student in Year 10 who is the most outstanding all-round student in the year group.

  • Academic Achievement - The winner of the Tomori Award will work hard in their academic endeavours, always striving to achieve their best.
  • Extra-Curricular Participation - The winner of the Tomori Award will immerse themselves in the Extra-Curricular provision at Gravesend Grammar School and participate in a range of disciplines.
  • Community Minded Qualities - The winner of the Tomori Award will be a community minded student who supports others when in school and the wider community.

The scholarship will be a £1000 prize aimed to support them in their academic career as they enter Key Stage 5. This money must be used to support them in their A-Level academic endeavours at GGS.

At the start of year 9 the students will decide if they wish to work towards a Milton Award.

Once they have made that decision, they will be signed up and assigned a Milton tutor. The whole process will last for two years with students signing up at the start of year 9 and receiving their award at the end of year 10.

When the student has completed a component they will need to produce the evidence for that in order to be awarded the points. This can be a signature from a teacher, a certificate of achievement, a letter from a parent or teacher or another form of clear proof of achieving that component.

Once all components have been completed, evidence has been submitted and checked, students will attend a Prize Giving event to receive their award.

There are a wide range of components for the students to choose from as we want to provide students with the opportunity to participate in, and be recognised for, a diverse range of experiences. Different components will carry different points. They will all contribute to the varying levels of the Milton Award.
