Mission Statement

Mathematics is the means of looking at the patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in which they are constructed and realised. Numeracy is the means of making that knowledge useful.

Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data. Mathematics is important for pupils in many other areas of study, particularly Science and Technology. It is also important in everyday living, in many forms of employment, and in public decision-making. As a subject in its own right, Mathematics presents frequent opportunities for creativity, and can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a problem is solved for the first time, or a more elegant solution to a problem is discovered, or when hidden connections suddenly manifest.

It enables pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning, which they can use and apply with confidence. The power of mathematical reasoning lies in its use of precise and concise forms of language, symbolism and representation to reveal and explore general relationships. These mathematical forms are widely used for modelling situations.

The subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the World.

We aim:

  • To set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils.
  • To build resilience, curiosity and a desire to solve real problems.
  • To offer a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
  • To explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics.
  • To prepare students for the next stage of their lives.

Student Voice

Key Stage 3

I think that maths is fun because you learn a lot and there are lots of challenges that make you persevere. In my time so far at this school, I have enjoyed maths and it is definitely one of my favourite subjects. M.A.

1+1=2 is maths, at least that is what most people think it is, but maths is more than just a set of numbers. Gravesend Grammar School has helped me realise this and deepen my knowledge, I have learned only in two terms that Maths is all about concepts and formulas and all links to psychological thinking. Maths has always been one of my passions and GGS has provided a foundation base for me, which I can use as a resource to help. My teachers and peers have guided me to this point in my journey, where I can look back and reflect on my hard work. I look forward to continuing my journey of Maths throughout GGS and will work hard and continue to succeed. R.S.

Key Stage 4

Maths will allow me to, later in life, explorer the secrets of the universe and why everything is as it is. Maths has given me many transferable skills that I will be able to use in my A level subjects. Alif K

Key Stage 5

Studying Maths and Further at A-Level has allowed me to get to grips with solving tough problems systematically, which is a great stepping stone for studying anything mathematically related at university. - Caleb A

Studying Further Maths has been challenging at times, but with the amazing support from the department here at GGS, it has been a valuable and fun learning experience. - Katie P
